Black Girl’s Magazine launched by Canadian students

BBC News have featured Black Girl’s Magazine.

After deciding they were not being represented in the magazines they read, a group of young Canadians decided to create their own.

Black Girl’s Magazine contains a collection of articles and cartoons written by the students, aged 9 to 13.

Each issue is written and drawn by the group of young Canadians, aged 9 to 13 with some editorial assistance from adult mentors.

The magazine mobilizes the image of black girls, it makes them visible, it validates them. It gives them confidence to know that they are actually part of the Canadian society.

The girls meet once a month at a local library to discuss story ideas. The magazine from a small group of girls is now beginning to find its way to becoming heard.

Orders have started pouring in from Canada and the U.S.
